For several years, I was one of the main go tos for Voiceover and Internet radio production in the blindness community. I also produced imaging for a medium market FM terrestrial CCM station. I was told by the programmer of said station, “I just don’t see it in my head like you do.” I’ve been out of the game professionally for the last five years, but I still gots the understanding / know how’s, ins and outs of imaging.

What is radio imaging?

Radio imaging is what you hear between the tracks on commercial, terrestrial FM or SXM radio. It’s sometimes called the face of the station. It complements the energy of the music and the jocks. They are short 5-15 second pieces that announce the station name, the format of the station. They are designed to pull the listeners attention from their surroundings and let them know where they are tuned into. Depending on the stations format they can be humorous in nature, (Normally found in rock radio, from classic to active.) Caring in nature and centered around a work day (Adult contemporary.) Powerful and proud (Rock and country radio), or tugging at your heart strings (Christian contemporary, CCM), just to name a few examples. They can be full of fx, listener, artist drops and music beds, or just a dry voiceover. When the station is programmed correctly, imaging will, as a live DJ does, piggyback off emotion or energy of the last song and next songs played.

Imaging is different than a spot. A spot is a commercial 30-60 seconds. Though this course will focus on imaging, you can no doubt carry over the production values and concepts found in this course to writing voicing and producing spots.
